Consisting of four rotations that sought to determine our destiny as students: the 2024 Career Fair at Osage High School provided many opportunities for both in-school and post-secondary employment. The first of these rotations was a traditional expo style fair. In the gymnasium, over forty companies handed out applications, flyers, (the crowd favorite) sweet treats, and discussed career opportunities.
The second rotation, communications, focused on the day-to-day interactions that individuals have in the workplace and how to maximize their efficacy. Presenter TJ Sweet’s focus on gratitude seemed to really hit home with the students.
Next, we ventured into the auditorium for a panel of Osage alumni who have made their way as entrepreneurs in the Lake area. Seeing leaders who were once in our shoes as high schoolers behind the title of recognizable Lake businesses inspired questions and a desire to push through to our own next steps.
Finally, the Army National Guard presented interview skills and strategies. We discussed common questions that may be brought up in a college or job interview and then had the opportunity to test ourselves against the teacher. In this mock interview students were able to grade their classmates’ ability to answer questions on the spot. In a combination of humor and second-hand embarrassment, we were left with a memorable and practical lesson.
As a senior, knowing and understanding the future that lay before me is an intimidating prospect. But having a school community willing to take the time to prepare me to face some of these unknowns is reassuring.
